Ancient Rome
Three perspectives on ancient Rome
The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine tell connected stories, but each rewards a different way of looking. The amphitheatre reveals the scale of public spectacle; the Forum brings civic life into focus; the hill above puts imperial ambition in its landscape. For a guest at Palazzo Manfredi, this is a natural place to begin discovering Rome, with a guide helping the surviving fragments become a readable city.

Start with the visit you want
Decide whether your priority is a first introduction or a particular part of the monument. Colosseum ticket categories have different inclusions. The standard Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ticket lists the amphitheatre's first and second levels; an arena, underground or attic visit requires the appropriate ticket. A guide does not automatically grant access to every area.
For a first visit, ask for a balanced account of all three places. If engineering, imperial households or archaeology especially interests you, say so when requesting a guide. That preference can shape the route before tickets are arranged.
Build the day around the Colosseum entry
Treat the booked Colosseum entry as the anchor of the outing. Follow the arrival instructions on the confirmed ticket, allow for screening and keep your identification ready. The park's current visitor information requires an identity document alongside the ticket. Avoid placing a tightly timed lunch or another reservation immediately after the archaeological visit.
The Forum and Palatine can be approached before or after the amphitheatre, within the conditions of the selected ticket. Check the permitted validity and number of entries rather than assuming that you can leave for lunch and return. A nearby hotel makes a comfortable break possible once your visit is complete.
Let the Forum become a neighbourhood
Among the Forum's columns, it helps to ask what people actually did here. This was a centre of political, religious and commercial activity, reshaped over many centuries. Ask your guide to choose a few buildings and explain their functions before moving on. A temple, a civic basilica and a commemorative arch reveal different aspects of Roman public life.
Pause to look across the whole valley as well as at individual remains. The changes in ground level and the mix of ancient structures with later buildings are part of the story. A focused route often leaves a clearer impression than an attempt to identify every ruin.
Keep energy for the Palatine
The Palatine adds another scale: residences, gardens and the relationship between the imperial household and the city below. Augustus chose the hill for his home, and later emperors developed extensive palace complexes here. Give this part of the outing enough attention to feel distinct from the Forum.
This is an outdoor visit with walking, slopes and uneven surfaces. Choose supportive footwear, carry sun protection and plan water breaks in warm weather. After rain, take particular care on stone paving. Describe any mobility needs when enquiring so that a suitable route and the status of accessible facilities can be checked.
Shape the outing with the concierge
Use Palazzo Manfredi's existing concierge enquiry form to share your preferred dates, party size, children's ages, language and interests. Mention any tickets you already hold and any area you particularly hope to enter. This avoids designing a route around an access option that is unavailable.
Ask the team to confirm guide availability, ticket inclusions, the meeting point and the full cost before proceeding. An enquiry is a request, with arrangements subject to confirmation. For a gentler second outing, continue your discovery of the surrounding streets with our Monti walking guide.
Before you set out
Does every Colosseum ticket include the underground?
No. Access depends on the ticket category. Ask specifically for the underground if it matters to you, and wait for the ticket and availability to be confirmed.
Can the three sites be visited in a different order?
The Colosseum has a booked entry time. The Forum and Palatine can be planned around it, subject to the validity and entry conditions of your ticket.
